Janathakshan and People in Need to host a Series of Events for World Environment Day

Janathakshan (Gte) Ltd and People In Need, (Czech Republic) will host and co-organise a series of events through the EU SWITCH-Asia Initiative Up-scaling Biogas Technology for Sustainable Development and Mitigating Climate Change in Sri Lanka to commemorate World Environment Day that takes place on Friday June 05, 2015. The sequence of activities starts Friday June 05, in Kurunegala and Galle and concludes in Kandy with an exhibition on June 13, organised by the Municipal Council in Kandy. The globally declared theme for 2015 is “Sustainable Consumption and Production” with the slogan “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.”

Presenting a statement for World Environment Day, People in Need Regional Co-ordinator for Asia Petr Drbohlav said, “Climate change seems accelerating – let us join hands in preserving the Earth for our future generations”

In honour of World Environment Day, the EU funded initiative will collaborate with the Southern Province Development Authority, North Western Provincial Council and Kandy Municipal Council from June 05-13 to organise awareness workshops, and conduct a lecture series on the topic of “Environment and Climate Change”; partake in an exhibition and officially declare open biogas units. The EU SWITCH-Asia initiative assists tourism SMEs and households benefit from sustainable solid waste management and cost savings through energy and resource efficiency. Tourism SMEs adopting “green” technology will also increase their marketing potential and gain the access to “green finances” provided by micro-finance institutions.
